Natures abomination

My memory is foggy, and there are gaps where I am missing a piece of important message. I feel like my mind has altered, the large pieces are there but I cannot make out the details. Eudoxius and Arnis seem to be experiencing the same gaps in their memories.

We were traveling to Magnimar in search of sheriff Hemlock, who was due back in Sandpoint 2 days prior. Fearing that the goblin attack was still pending we left to find Hemlock or try and secure additional forces from Magnimar, we were making good time. We encountered a abandon caravan, and went to investigate the surrounding woods. As we m.ade our way through the forest we came upon a clearing and saw something in the grass, we could not make out exactly what it was, but I felt we found some members of the caravan.

The sight made me uneasy, as we got closer they were bodies. Upon closer examination the people were all laying face down in nightgowns. It seems like they may have lived in the structures we could see in the distance, there appeared to be 1 large house and maybe 2 smaller cabins or sheds right before the tree line. As we neared the house, you can see a change in the grass from green and lush to withered and fragile. Eudoxius seemed to be on edge, but he did not let on that something was amiss, and I felt anxious, and my body was reacting to something that my brain had not registered yet.

We entered the house and found a dead body. The curious part about this dead body, was the cause of death and the scorched walls and floor around the body. The face was gaunt with dark circles around the eyes. The jaw seemed extended beyond that of a normal being, almost like a snake that can dislocate it’s jaw to swallow prey. Except for some reason it reminded me of something escaping from this shell of a man. The death was identical to the way Tsuto died in a locked cell that no one had access to.

We found something in the house, and this is where my memory starts to fail me. We were in the upstairs bedroom and found a bloodied axe… something was carved in the floor… what was it? Passing through the rest of the house and the cabins is a blur, almost as if was only partially conscious.

As we exited the last cabin, it was eerily quiet an unnatural stillness. My eye was drawn to the tree line, where there was one large dead tree and it seemed like the blight was emanating from this tree. How could this be possible? As we stood there watching, we noticed movement in the ground and the branches of the tree were starting to slither towards us.

As the adrenaline started to wake me, I realized the source of the blight was a undead Treeant! I have never seen one, I have heard that one of my cousins have encountered this abomination of the forests and 2 of his companions fell to it. I knew we had to stay out of it’s reach, there seemed to be a aura of some sort that it was emanating and Eudoxius seemed to fare the worse from it.

Arnis shouted that something was moving behind us. My felt my stomach drop and had the feeling this tree ant was not the only undead being in the clearing. Just as I feared the bodies we passed earlier had risen. Then the door to a cabin opened and another lifeless being was staggering at us.

Fire and magic was on our side as we battled the tree ant. Some flaming bolts, flasks of oil and a few defensive spells stopped the approaching tree ant. Now we had to worry about the ghouls that were approaching. Eudoxius connection with his Diety seemed to be flowing through him and casting its divine protection to those that traveled with him.

Its been two days since last I wrote in this journal, though it feels like a calendar year has passed. I believe the popular saying is “No rest for the weary”, a truer statement there is not. For as soon as I return to Sandpoint I am torn from this small city that has grown close to my heart. Sheriff Belor Hemlock’s return is overdue. Cerein, Arnis and I ride for Magnimar to investigate. En route to Magnimar trying to blaze a trail through spring growth and washed out roads in unrelenting torrential downpours we have been detoured twice now. Yesterday we were drawn from the road to a small farm. Death and evil permeated every inch of the property and neighboring wilderness. The bodies of family members laid face down in the dead grasses in front of the house. Upon investigation of the home we found a black scorched room much akin to what we found back in the private holding cell in Sandpoint. We also made and important find in the form of ________ (data missing). Upon attempting to depart from this desecrated homestead we were confronted by the once living inhabitants and an undead treant which we dispatched in short order. After departing we rode as hard as weather permitted for our destination until we were waylaid by a pack of the largest wolves I have ever seen. The wolves set upon us as we were approaching this wilderness camp where I now sit. It seems as though this man and his son are transporting some infants to an orphanage from Magnimar and made camp here for the night- I feel as though they would have all perished had we not arrived when we did. The father is stable but unconscious and his son and the children are safe. We were able to learn very little from the boy, hopefully his father will be able to tell us more when he comes to, until then I suppose we will be babysitting.

Walking back to Sandpoint has given me some time to reflect and write once again. Amiko is safe. Many have fallen to our blades, arrows, magic, and faith. We have slain Nawalia, and saved Amiko from certain sacrifice, but a great weight still rests on my heart, I have a grave feeling all is still not well. It very well may be just the trials and hard times of late, but I can sense an evil so strong its almost palpable. I had thought that slaying Nawalia would give me some relief, put order to the chaos, but I still have this feeling there is yet a greater foe.

I pray often these days, I owe my Gods my life, for without them I would be dead before this day. So many times has my life been on the line, and so many times was my life almost torn from my vessel. Aroden and Iomedae surely watch over me.

Cerein, Revan, Arnis- These are truly great men, and in the short time I have known these fellows each has put the welfare of Sandpoint and its residents before themselves, including myself, I truly could not ask for better companions. Alone none of this would have been posible, and together it seems there is nothing we cannot accomplish. A bond that would have taken years to forge, we have in days through combat and hardship, just as I would lay down my life for these men, so would they for me.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: For thou art with me; Thy sword and thy bow, they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies; Thou annointest my head with oil; My cup runneth over.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the House of Aroden forever.

Goblins and the sea beast

We have learned that Amico Kaijistu has been kidnapped by Nawalia, and intended to be sacrificed to Lamashtu. We believe the sacrifice is for a Rite of transformation and Nawalia wishes to remove her “angelic taint” and become something far worse. We have traversed a many tunnels and have come out close to the Thistletop lair, we can see the tip of it above the treetops. Arnis & Revan went to scout entrances to the lair and have only found one passage through a giant wall of brambles, this would be a great spot to herd people to or ambush them.

I was right about the brambles, as we were passing through we started hearing goblin calls, like a alarm to let others know some cattle have been herded into their trap. As we left the passageway it opened to a small clearing with a cave entrance, the calls were getting louder and our only option was to enter the cave. We proceeded with haste and caution into the cave and saw nothing but a dead end and a hole that went down very far. The calls were getting louder and closer, we were arguing about what we should do, go down into the unknown or try and face a large contingent of goblins. Down the hole into the unknown! We tied 2 lengths of rope together and went spelunking, now this reminded me of my days with Professor Maddry and I started to reminisce of the times when I did not fear for my life. I know some of my family would be thrilled with what I have been up to.

The hole led to a underwater cave and we were on a shelf that was exposed due to the low tide. As I touched the floor a loud roar was unleashed from the other side of the cave and then I heard a giant splash.Maybe it would have been better to face the goblins? Goblins I know what they look like and are capable of, now we have a massive water bound beast to be wary of. Seconds after this thought a giant seal appeared on the edge of the shelf, this monstrosity was as tall as Eudoxius’ and had the mouth of a shark with as many rows of teeth. The seal let out another fearful roar, the effect it had on me crushed my spirit of adventure and my will to help the others engage it in battle. I will admit that this was not my finest moment, the fear of death was overwhelming me and I had to flee from this monster. In my hysterics I jumped into the water that was still in the cave and was beset with the urge to try and swim away. The battle was not going well for my companions. The seal was swift and it hide very tough, then it got a hold of Eudoxius, a hold so crushing he dropped his weapon. Feeling the cold water lap into my face and witnessing the Eudoxius’ sword falling from his grasp snapped me out of the fear of the beast. I was once again able to stand by my comrades side and aide in this battle, I climbed to the highest point of the outcropping and steadying my crossbow with bow hands, breathing deeply I focused and let loose a bolt with such accuracy it flew into the seals open maw and was lodged in the back of it’s throat. Time seemed to slow as I watched the creatures eyes grow wide with pain and then it seemed as if the the black pupils slowly faded to a cool grey as the life was leaving it’s body. We needed to tend to Eudoxius’s wounds with haste, I am so glad we have met the cleric Arnis as he was able to lay hands on Eudoxius.

Oathday, 1st of Sarenith, 4710 AR

These are the longest days of my life.

It is the afternoon, possibly early evening- We have traversed the extensive smuggling tunnel system under the city. While navigating the eastern tunnel branch we encountered a lone Sin-spawn guarding the first portion of the passage. Revan stumbled forward missing the vile creature. Taking advantage of the situation I sprung forward filled with the divine might cleaving the distracted Sin-spawn in two. Continuing on we venture forth into a room which we are above on a wooden platform, we continue on clearing our current level until we came into a large poorly lit room. Revan and Arnis were convinced something was on the ceiling, watching them?- well that wasn’t the case at all, they through a torch up as high in the air as they could, getting the attention of a very angry, very disgusting [mutated? experiment?] Goblin Tribe Leader Koravis [identified by the sash he carried]. Immediately the four armed Koravis charges us. The battle was short but intense, we clearly had him out numbered, but that didn’t make him any less fearsome of a combatant. For a goblin leader he seemed out of place, and he didn’t say a word, which for goblins is very odd. They sing, they laugh, they talk – a lot. Between the silence and the extra arms, it is my theory is there is some dark magic or science at work here, possibly some combination there of. Cerein takes some samples and we investigate the wooden grate covers which eerie moans have been emanating since our battle. Below are decrepit ancient zombies.. it seems as though they have been their a very, very long time. From above we smashed all of the wooden covers and with the wood started fires in each pit bringing eternal death to the undead below. In a separate room on this level was a room with red metallic walls [made from red tears?]. In the room were a variety of floating items including a dead maggot ridden crow. After much experimentation and examination we obtained the items in the room, we laughably figured out after a simple levitation spell had been cast on the room. Backtracking now we head below- immediately we are attacked by two Sin-spawn. We dispatch them and move forward. In the next room is a Six foot tall statue of Alaznus [Runelord] holding a book and Ransuer [which I released from her grasp]. Following the passages we come to a room with a pool in its center, it is ornamentaly decorated with skulls around its edge. Immediately a shrieking head with wings flies from the pools center and tries to lock Revan in an embrace [kiss]. Revan resisted and through the head out of the way just long enough for Cerein to take it out with a shot from his crossbow. Cerein collected the head in a bag for further study. Moving on the tunnel branched again we headed right down the more well-lit path to clear the path before checking the other darker route. We come to a small offering shrine to Lamashtu [Note: Needs to be Consecrated/Destroyed] and beyond the shrine are large double doors. Beyond the doors would be our greatest test ever, a winged woman and her Sin-spawn assault us in this unholy cathedral. The battle ends with most of my allies dieing or near death. By a miracle I was able to save them and restore them to rough shape, but they can at least walk now. They were injured as we tried to disable and deactivate the Sin-spawn fountain. [A sentence begins but the writing stops mid word as if the writer’s attention was lurched away by some surprise]

ichor of evil

The days are blurring together as the plot against Sandpoint is becoming clearer, it feels like old sins are awakening and clawing their way to the surface and will strangle the life from all they encounter.

I know there is some missing details from my last entry to this entry and even now I am having a hard time writing. I am very afraid of losing my life. A ghoul almost ended my brief wandering of this world, this has shaken me and I cannot even begin to chronicle the events of that night. I have to proceed with caution as I am not very experienced in the adventuring world. Coming from a world of antiquity, where are most dangerous encounter is with vagabonds or unsteady engineering, I must change the way I think.

The threat to Sandpoint appears to be more than just one councilman’s quest for power, a truce between the different goblin tribes has also been orchestrated by the councilman, the bastard child of a wealthy busnessman((Kaijutsu) – who is the father of the woman who owns the Rusty Dragon) and the girl Nawalia who is suspected to have been involved with the church’s arson. They are conspiring to topple Sandpoint, but for what purpose? The local sheriff has gone to Magnimar(the family of Eudoxius Indros lives there and has sway with the government. Thankfully Eudo sent along a letter verifying the need for additional aide and with his family’s status will hopefully expedite the request).

Journal Entry Four [Page 4]

Oathday, 1st of Sarenith, 4710 AR

The festival and unveiling celebrations ended sucessfully, a happy hopeful note for an otherwise grim day. We met with the Mayor, the Sheriff and Shilelu (seems to be an agent or spy of sorts) about the days events and happenings, and another possible attack on Sandpoint. The Sheriff rides to Magnimar for aid since his small militia and town guard will not suffice. He should be at least half-way to there by now. I pray for an expeditious journey and a safe return. There is evil in Sandpoint. The Aasimar Girl Nawalia has been tainted by evil, she was either always a demon or devil spawn, or has been tainted by some evil since she ran away from Sandpoint so many years ago. Could the rumors that she murdered her adoptive father, the previous Cleric who ran the Church here, before he was burned in it? I have come to know of the abomination she has become and wishes to be tainted further still. Tsuto Kaijutsu brother of Amiko Kaijutsu, tricked his sister and kidnapped her. We ambushed Tsuto by accident while searching for Amiko in her fathers Glassworks. He and a nasty little contingent of Goblins slew the staff and Lonjiku Kaijutsu, he was entombed in a glass coffin, perhaps while he was still alive. We thoroughly searched and interogated Tsuto learning the location of Amiko, she is to be some sort of sacrifice, along with Sandpoint to Lamashtu, also known as The Demon Queen, The Mother of Monsters, or Demon Mother. This is the darkest revelation indeed, it is what I feared when we encountered the undead, a great evil is coming and we must stand together against it. I pray my companions are ready for the horrors we will encounter in the coming hours. Arnis seems like he might be the exception, most times he has that stare like, hes seen his fare share, and then some. The way he interrogated Tsuto, I have never seen a man of the cloth be so brutal when hes not engaged in battle, maybe hes lost it a bit? Either way what finally got us the results was hypnosis thanks to Cerein. We sent Tsuto off bound and hooded with guards to be locked away. I think everyone is rested from the battle now and ready to depart.

Craziest thing I’ve seen today: Revan throwing a goblin into a furnace.

Friends in High Places
A Call to Arms

this scroll is of fine parchment and is bound by a red ribbon and bears the official wax seal of the Indros Family

Lieutenant Commander Flenkis Waravon,

I write to you in the very early hours of Oathday, The First of Sarenith, you should be reading this tonight at best or by Fireday at the very worst. I had hoped to be speaking with you in person after my return to Magnimar and under better circumstances. A great tragedy has befallen Sandpoint. There was an organized assault on Sandpoint during the festival and unveiling of the new Cathedral of Iomedae. With the help of a few brave souls we were able to overcome and push back our attackers. Upon investigation of the attack as to why and how this came about, a plot to take the city has revealed itself. Fernik Maire, Councilman and owner of the Sandpoint Red Tears Mine, has conspired to overthrow the city and place himself as Mayor of Sandpoint. Fernik has had the mine shut down for bogus reasons and has been brining in “Miners” under false pre-tenses. These “Miners” purpose is not to get the mine back up and operational, no, their purpose is to aid in overthrowing the city. If Sandpoint falls into the wrong hands it could be great trouble for Magnimar, as this by land is not only a major trade route, but the last line of defense before you reach Magnimar from the North up the coast or from the East. If not for these reasons alone, I have some more troubling news, I have discovered undead here in Sandpoint as well. There very well could be an even greater threat here than Fernik Maire. Sheriff Belor Hemlock whom I entrusted this letter with knows Sandpoint better than anyone, if you need any information you don’t already have on the city he is your man. Sandpoint needs to be secured, Mayor Kendra Deverin is under 24 hour watch by the town guards and I am going to continue my investigation in the meantime.

I know I can count on you old friend.

Send your family my best.

The Glassworks
Sleep is but a luxury

Good thing that sleep is more of a luxury than a necessity to me.

I met the other heroes in the very late/early hours. Reavin a Rogue and Shilani a monk off on her exploration on the world. We gathered at the Rusty Dragon for some rest, a drink and to meet with the mayor and sheriff. I hoped the barkeep would have heard more stories from some of the patrons that have come and gone to help us find out more of what is going on. Who could pass up a few drink. I believe that he knows more than he lets on. Or perhaps he doesn’t realize that he knows something. We examined the Smoky Stone a little closer and revealed that it was actually 9 stones fit tightly together to form one. There was a calm and aura about it.

After my watch I was able to recharge myself for about an hour or two. I was awaken by Cerain as he discovered that Amiko had gone missing. A letter was found and her room was undisturbed as if she was never there. The letter said that Amiko was to meet her brother, (Suto), at the Glassworks that their father owned. I hear that Tsuto makes Darcy seem like baby Halfling. We sent the Rogue and Monk to the Glass Works to check things out for their stealth would render them undetectable…little did I know that the rogue would be the clumsiest rogue that I have ever met. Maybe it was the early morning hours and lack of sleep.

After we regrouped we all went to the Glassworks for something seemed amiss. We entered and found pain. We surprised a large group of goblins burning the remains of dead workers. One never gets used to the smell of burning human, or other races, flesh. I’ve smelled it many times. I even remember that smell since I was a baby. Our surprise attacked gave us the upper hand in the fight. I will give a nod of approval to the rogue as threw one of the goblins into one of the furnaces…I will retract that nod as he spilled oil on a bench missing another goblin. In a matter of minutes we destroyed the party and took a prisoner. It turned out to be Tsuto. We discovered a book of detailed attack plans but without dates or times. Amiko is also still alive and is being held at Thisletop to be sacrificed.

My interrogation methods may have upset the monk. I guess my human side of bloodlust broke through and I may have been a bit rough. I just cannot stand when innocent people die and when a son kills a father, the way that he did, and possibly a sister. There is nothing like the bond of family. Even my short lived bond with mine is within me to this day. If the child monk cannot stomach it maybe she should return to the monastery. I do have to remember that she is still a child and not as jaded as I am. She has not traveled the same years I have traveled and not yet seen what I have seen.

I am curious about the goblin tunnels at the Glassworks. We need to get Amiko before it’s too late.

Treachery abound

Today has been a day of intrigue, death and the fear of dying. I fear my skill is lacking in the world of adventuring and may lead to a early demise. I know it is my path to be separated from my family to live in the world of man, to be “Forlorn”. Forlorned, I don’t care to be marked by that word, if we don’t learn the workings of the world of man, I feel we are destined to become another fallen race and only be talked of in fables and lore, another story to be told to children or lost in the books of historians. I fear that one day someone will be digging up and chronicling the remains of our strongholds trying to figure out what has happened to the world of elves. The irony is not lost on me, that this is the path I am now following….

The Swallow Tail festival began today, Sandpoint was christening a new multi faith Church. The speakers are the head priest of Iomedae a man named Zantus and the towns Mayor Kendra Deverin. There was a tall armored human in the crowd who stood out at the front of the crowd assembled, his sword as wide as a small child and as tall as I and he has armor that could almost rival the quality of dwarves and the fine artistic details of the elves. I think this may be the Paladin of Aroden. There were another pair of adventures in the middle of the crowd, the male wielding 2 thin swords, the names of that particular weapon escape me as I write this(insert weapon type later), another warrior or someone who is adept at emptying the pouches of unsuspecting persons? The girl who is his companion has caught my attention, she has the build of a youthful warrior with the scars to match, but no noticeable weapons or no armor. I think she spoke to her companion in Shoanti, but I am no eavesdropper so I did not try to listen to their conversation.

I did introduce myself to the man I suspected to be the Paladin, and I was right! We spoke for a few minutes before the ceremony began. I learned his name is Eudoxius Indros, I will have to ask Professor Medrine if his surname is familiar to him.

Chaos erupted, first a scream then a guttural yell. Next thing I know I was being shoved as people ran from the church and from the corner of my eye I spotted something on fire rolling towards the church. The square emptied pretty quickly and some people who I suspected were adventurers were no where to be seen. All that was left was the Paladin, myself, the 2 I suspected were Shaonti and a score of Goblins. My heart was racing and it felt like thunder in my ears, as I steeled my self for battle I realized the thunder was not in my mind, but a actual drum being beaten behind us where the flaming wreckage was. We were between 2 sets of goblins and the one with the drum seemed to be in charge of this group, was it a shaman or something else higher than the normal goblin?

The paladin ran into the first group of goblins and the 2 Shaonti followed. The paladin cleaved a goblin in two and I swear the young woman punched a goblin and it fell, then warrior or rogue was wielding both blades, it was like watching a whirling dervish. As I came out of my amazement, I cast a spell hoping to help the defenders and seeing my spell have a effect on the goblins. The first group of goblins were dispatched and then the second were on us. I stayed in the background as my skill is with magic and the crossbow, I have been trained with the quarterstaff, but feel more comfortable with the accuracy I have with the crossbow. My only combat spell I know was not much help, but I did manage to score a hit to the drum wielding goblin and daze it so the Paladin could deliver the killing blow. Now we had a fire to smother so the new church did not succomb to the fate of its predecessor. Finally some town folks have come out to provide assistance. We decided to wander the town to see the damage the goblins inflicted and every once in a while we could hear the goblins scurrying about at the fringe of town.

A man came bursting out of the White Deer inn, pursued by a goblin riding a filthy beast, it looked like a large dog with mange or some other skin disease. Not a creature I would want barreling down on me as I lay on the ground. Thankfully Eudoxius was able to get between the man and the goblin on the beast. Around the corner of the building came another group of goblins who chased a dog and killed it. What is with these goblins and their hatred for animals, especially the canine animals. They were screaming with excitement over the kill of the animal, this enraged me as I cannot stand cruelty to animals. As we engaged the goblins it seems the battle was going in our favor until the Shaonti girl Shilani fell, the paladin was struck with something. Are was holding his own against 2 goblins, but he was hurt and it seemed like he was gaining the upper hand. A goblin made it within striking distance of me and made a action against me, but luck was on my side as it fumbled with it’s weapon I was able to strike it down with my staff. It laid there broken, its head at a odd angle and a pool of blood forming at the side of the head. Eudoxius and Are killed the main goblin and its steed. A few goblins came onto this seen and quickly retreated screaming that the town would be theirs and a cryptic phrase about a smoky orb.

The man who was almost killed turned out to be a local noble named Aldern Foxglove. He assisted us in taking Shalani to the church hoping the priests would be able to heal her, Eudoxius needed to be treated for a skin affliction, Are suffered some cuts from the goblins weapons and somehow I was untouched.

So much has happened today I think the church is going to have to reschedule its christening.
